Funny women: gender and comedy in the twenty-first century

Abstract

This introduction establishes the theme for a special issue of the journal Comedy Studies. Interrogating the historical relationship between gender and comedy this article will examine contemporary examples of male and female comics who actively address these issues in their live work as well as their writing. Drawing on film, tv, literature and practice, the introduction will offer a key outline of the debates under discussion in this special issue.
