Fin de siècle gothic

Victoria Margree, Bryony Randall

Research output: Chapter in Book/Conference proceeding with ISSN or ISBNChapter

Abstract

Using three figures which populate fin de siècle Gothic fiction - the vampire, the man of science, and the ghost - this chapter explores canonical works by Stoker, Stevenson, James and Wells, alongside work by lesser-known writers such as Charlotte Riddell, Edith Nesbit, Florence Marryat and B. M. Croker. It argues that fictions by female writers address many of the same cultural themes as those by men, but often evince a distinctly female sensibility that at times modulates into overt feminist criticism.
