Abstract

This 30 minute documentary explores the making of Dario Argento’s 1977 film in light of wider social trends and tensions inherent in 1970s Italy. The documentary explores the extent to which the filmmaker's visual style was complicated by the reception of the gender representations in his films. In the course of the documentary both the director and other key creators of Suspiria debate the film and its meanings with academics and film critics. The range of topics discussed include issues of narrative style, reflections of 1970s political tensions in Argento's cinema and innovative new readings of the lesbian subtexts to Suspiria.
