Abstract

Fairground Attractions investigates the cultural production of the visual iconography of the popular pleasure grounds from the eighteenth century pleasure garden to the contemporary theme park. The research identifies the literary genres common across carnival sites from fairy tale to the Western, and traces their historical transition across a range of media to become familiar icons of popular culture.
