Evaluation of motion capture systems for golf swings: optical vs. gyroscopic

Abstract

In the summer of 2007 David Blair, international PGA coach, asked the University of Brighton to motion capture golf swings. Davidpsilas aim is to visually demonstrate the importance of the hands during the golf swing using 3D animation. To generate the required data two motion capture systems were employed; optical and gyroscopic. While capturing full body motion it was established optical marker proximity severely reduces the integrity of motion data. Presented is an overview of each system, how they were employed during the project and a summary of their advantages and disadvantages.
