Abstract
Simplified models to estimate the seismic force reduction factor R have relied on the assumption of an elastic-perfectly plastic response of the structure. However, realistic structures exhibit a non-zero postyield stiffness that can have a significant effect on the maximum base shear the structure can experience. This paper introduces a new formula to estimate the seismic force reduction factor that accounts for the postyield stiffness of the structure. The proposed formula is based on the equal energy criterion. Comparisons between real R factors and those estimated by the proposed formula are critically discussed
