Abstract

The paper examines the political and economic circumstances surrounding self-build housing with particular regard to the current UK housing crisis. The paper studies two historic examples of self-built housing - the Viennese 'wild settlements' of the inter-war years and the 'plotland' settlements in Essex during the same period - and relates these to current housing models. The paper examined these in relation to the economic studies of Mariana Mazzucato regarding the relationship of public to private sector funding models and how these might be applied to housing via alternative models of procurement such as self-build.
