Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of discourse analysis. The assumptions of, approaches within, and applications of discourse analysis are described. The analytic steps undertaken by researchers in conducting discourse analysis are outlined. Quality assurance issues and potential pitfalls associated with discourse analysis are described. This chapter also shows how discourse analysis can be used as part of a broader methodological toolkit by psychologists.

By the end of this chapter, readers should understand:
• The main tenets of discourse analysis;
• The assumptions of two key approaches within discourse analysis (namely, discursive psychology and Foucauldian discourse analysis) and their applications;
• The stages of analysis in empirical using two types of discourse analysis;
• How to conduct discourse analysis of a text;
• The potential pitfalls of discourse analysis.
