Abstract
A catalogue essay commissioned for the photography exhibition CRASH by Rachel Hope Allan, presented at Rivington Street Gallery, New York, USA in 2017. The essay proposes that the work exposes differences in speed, materiality and technology that produce a desired affect in the viewer. Techno-fetishistic assemblages in the subject matter (based on the J. G Ballard novel of the same name) as well as the materiality (in the photographic practices used - analogue and digital entanglements) are at once agonising and exquisite: an indeterminacy that provides an elemental access point to the work.
