Determinants of Long-Distance Performance in Youth Swimmers

Research output: Chapter in Book/Conference proceeding with ISSN or ISBNChapter

Abstract

The present chapter offers a framework for an in-depth understanding of the three main determinants of the long-distance performances. The first part of the chapter introduces maximal aerobic power, aerobic capacity, and cost of swimming, in relation to the energetics of low-intensity, long-distance swimming, and explains how these determinants change during childhood. Some methods for their measurement are then presented with a selection based on applicability when working with young swimmers. Practitioners are encouraged to use these methods to assess effectiveness of their training programmes and monitor short-term (season) and long-term (career) changes.
