Abstract
This chapter discusses the suitability of a range of different fibre, fabric and garment construction technologies for manufacturing base layers for the older figure shape. The chapter also discusses the role of body and base layers in a layering clothing system. It describes in detail the development of body and base layer garments in which the body shape needs and aesthetic requirements of a group of people aged 60-75 were assessed and addressed as part of the Design for Ageing Well cross-disciplinary research project. The chapter finally discusses the technical and aesthetic design processes when designing body and base layers, including bras for the body shape of woman over 60.
