Abstract

An invited interview with Annebella Pollen on the subject of Health and Efficiency magazine for the monthly podcast series, Censored, devised and led by Irish historian Dr Aoife Bhreatnach.
Censored is dedicated to exploring publications banned by the Irish state censor. According to the Censored podcast: "The Irish censor was infamous, banning 12,491 books and magazines between 1929 and 1998. Alongside the greats like Doris Lessing and Samuel Beckett were thousands of books, now mostly forgotten. Mediocre novels, sex manuals, true crime stories, pulp fiction, racy memoirs and queer literature: the Irish censor banned them all."
Health and Efficiency magazine, established at the start of the twentieth century, was devoted to matters health and fitness, including from the 1920s, sunbathing and nudism, to which it became dedicated in the 1930s. It continues today, with a slightly modified title, as H&E Naturist, the leading newsstand periodical for naturism in Britain. It was banned in 1933; the Irish ban continues today.
