Abstract
The development and use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools has raised concerns about assessment practice in higher education (HE). Coursework has been recognized as a major assessment instrument in HE which provides students with hands-on-experience and the opportunity for effective feedback through formative and summative approaches aimed at improving learning.
The use of coursework as an assessment tool however faces some drawbacks due to high rate of collusion, plagiarism and personation. Recently, the availability and potential misuse of AI for cheating has made it more challenging. Several concerns including academic integrity, privacy, bias, ethical issues, and students’ over-reliance on the AI tools have been identified as major barrier. Nevertheless, the benefit of using coursework outweighs the disadvantages and thus, its usage appears uncontentious. Therefore, the need to re-image and redesign the assessment instrument is of high importance; however, there is limited evidence on how to effectively deploy this in practice.
In this session, we will demonstrate and discuss an AI-enabled assessment strategy from theory to practice which is aimed to mitigate the challenges of assessment by coursework.
