Abstract

The Government's agenda has anincreasing focus on young peopleand sport with the recognition thatby 2010, they should have opportunitiesto participate in at least two hours of PEand sport in school per week, with a furthertwo hours available outside schoolhours. This article describes the findingsof an evaluation study recently completedby members of the research team atthe Trust for the Study of Adolescence(TSA). Commissioned by Sport Englandduring 2005-6, the research was a twophaseevaluation of the CommunitySport and Enhanced PE, School Sportsand Club Link Strategy (PESSCL) pilotprogramme. The research addressedkey reasons why some young peopleonly rarely, or perhaps never, engagewith sport or recreational physical activitiesbeyond the school curriculum.
