Description

The GloKnoCo project aimed to establish best practice for the teaching and dissemination of Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) projects across the EU and internationally in order to establish recommendations for the EU higher education sector, member states’ institutions and partner institutions. The project sought to start a dialogue between universities and different stakeholders to ensure that the teaching of SDP courses addressed the needs of the sector whilst helping NGOs to engage with research.

Project meetings took place in Olomouc (2020), Brighton - Eastbourne (2020) and Paderborn (2021) before each intensive study programme with all the project partners.

During the intensive study programmes, students formed international working groups (6 groups) and prepare own fictitious SDP projects. During the virtual mobility they worked on SDP project proposals under the guidance of project partners’ experts. Several online discussions and lectures were organised during this phase. At the end of the online work, all the groups met during field trip (in Berlin 2020, in Belfast 2021, in Brussels in 2022).

Different SDP actors were visited giving students a chance to reflect the knowledge and skills they gained during the meetings. This structure enabled the participants to deepen their own knowledge and internalise the whole one-year learning process.

The School of Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Brighton hosted project partners in 2022 as the final event of the Global Sport for Development Knowledge Collaborative (GloKnoCo) project.

University of Brighton had joined partner institutions throughout the project, travelling to Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic, and the University of Paderborn in Paderborn, Germany. They have also benefited from the educational trips to Berlin and Brussels to network and learn from development practitioners, academics, and policy makers from around Europe and the world.

This event welcomed students and staff from universities in Czech Republic and Germany, along with NGOs from Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, and South Africa. The final instalment of the GloKnoCo project also included partners and speakers from Australia, Brazil, Colombia, Ireland, Korea, Rwanda, Canada and the United States.

Visitors participated and learnt about the University of Brighton’s renowned Football4Peace project as well as other development projects across Brighton.

Local organisations taking part in the project included:

> Albion in The Community
> Sussex Cricket’s Sussex Cricket Foundation
> VYD -a social impact Community Interest Company, that enacts grassroots football projects engaging marginalized communities,
> Nam Yang Martial Arts Club – a Brighton Community Association that works with the community, refugees and asylum seekers by providing martial arts sessions across Brighton and Hove.
