My research interests lie at the interface between land-use management and plant-soil processes. Currently I am involved in research that aims to improve ecological outcomes for tropical peatland restoration and grazing and fire management of tropical savannahs. I am particularly interested in research applying plant functional traits as a tool to advance the restoration ecology. A long line of my research addresses the impact of land management and restoration on ecosystem (plant and soil) carbon storage and sequestration. In recent years, I have worked as part of larger multi-disciplinary socio-ecological projects and enjoy collaborative projects and learning new perspectives. New to the University of Brighton, I welcome taking on new collaborative projects and research students.
My aim is to connect students with current ecological research and support students in building relevant skillset to become professional ecologists. At the University of Brighton a core part of my role is to teach students how to handle data, critically interpret data quality, carry out statistical analyses and communicate these results effectively. These are all skills I teach as part of data-driven exploration of ecology and conservation and often with plant-soil ecological examples. My teaching approaches centre around problem-based learning and social learning.
Modules I teach on include:
PB001 - Foundation Biology
BY138 – Essential skills for Bioscience
BY151 – Diversity of Life
BY157 – Terrestrial Ecosystems
BY364 – Hot topics in Ecology and Conservation
BY392 – Biology Experiment Projects
BY394 – Plant Ecology
BYM39 - Issues in Ecology and Conservation
PBM99 – MRes Research project
Happy to supervise post-graduate research projects aligned with my research interests, including: herbivore-plant-decomposer-soil interactions; carbon storage and plant-driven carbon pathways, e.g., grazing, decomposition and fire; restoration ecology from a plant-soil perspective and investigating the application of plant functional traits; plant and functional trait ecology in peatlands, grazed uplands and tropical savannahs, although projects on other habitats are welcome.
