Personal profile

Research interests

I have participated in various research projects in the fields of Regenerative Medicine and Molecular Medicine at CRMD and other research institutes, ranging from basic to clinical research. My focus has been on different biomarkers (such as those involved in the wound healing process), cellular signalling pathways (in various diseases such as Varicose vein, diabetic wound, etc.), and natural biomaterials (Alginate, Gelatine, etc.) for tissue regeneration and developing in-vitro models. One of my research interests is the inflammatory response in the regeneration and degeneration process, with a focus on Macrophage polarization towards M1 and M2 phenotypes. I have experience in creating in-vitro and animal models, as well as conducting clinical trials for different diseases. I am interested in clinical work as much as I am interested in isolating stem cells and creating in-vitro models in the laboratory. One of our aims is to develop theragnostic wound dressings to control cell activities and dock-specific proteins in collaboration with the Centre of Regenerative Medicine and Devices (CRMD) in the near future. One of my favourite research areas is bone and cartilage regeneration in Intervertebral Disc Degeneration, with a focus on developing a 3D printed model to link deformation and changes in the cell microenvironment to the development of pathological mechanical stress and inflammatory insults leading to nerve inflammation and back pain.

Supervisory Interests

I have the privilege of supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students from diverse backgrounds, including biologists, biomedical scientists, bioengineers, pharmaceutical and clinical professionals. I'm particularly interested in supervising research related to the study of inflammatory responses in chronic and acute wound healing processes, the role of the cell microenvironment in the development of pathological mechanical stress and inflammatory insults leading to nerve inflammation and back pain in Intervertebral Disc Degeneration, investigating macrophage polarization in healing and non-healing processes associated with different diseases, the use of biomaterials for cell scaffolding and in-vitro models, the role of mechanobiology in tissue degeneration (such as intervertebral disc, varicose vein, vascular malformation, etc.), development of theranostic wound dressings, wound healing process (e.g., biomarkers, signalling pathways), primary stem cell isolation and culturing for stem cell therapy and clinical trials of advanced therapies for cardiovascular disease. Any interdisciplinary projects across the listed areas are particularly interesting and welcome.

Knowledge exchange

I have had the opportunity to collaborate with over 20 research centres focussing on various research fields, including basic science and clinical studies. I am keen to continue expanding my research activities by connecting with research centres in biomedicine, biophysics, and artificial intelligence, as well as with companies involved in medical device manufacturing.
