Personal profile

Research interests

Sam is a PhD candidate at the University of Brighton researching “race” and American football. More specifically, his research focuses on the racialised differences within sporting positions and how this relates to present literature involving racism and racial stacking in sport. His thesis examines the precise qualities American football coaches look for at certain positions and how these attitudes can impact wider society.

Approach to teaching

Sam’s teaching approach is centred on creating an engaging environment for students to actively participate in. He encourages crucial discussion across a range of critical issues within sport including race, gender, sexuality and disability. He utilises his knowledge of American sports leagues to challenge students’ perceptions of British sport and introduce them to a potentially new landscape.
