PhD project outline:

‘Where does pacifism fit into this kind of thing?’ Conscientious objectors and the Second World War in Britain

Rosemary Rich is an AHRC-funded doctoral researcher. Her thesis ‘Where does pacifism fit into this kind of thing?’: Conscientious Objectors and the Second World War in Britain’ was inspired by her grandfather’s experience. Drawing upon approaches from cultural theory, the history of emotions and memory studies, her research uses conscientious objectors' personal testimony to explore the unique pressures and psychological challenges these individuals could face, both at the time and subsequently, in refusing to fight the ‘Good War’.
