Research interests
Owen researches interdisciplinary issues between sport, politics and the media, and is completing a PhD investigating the media’s influence over public perception of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He has been published in academic textbooks within sport media (2020 Routledge Handbook of Sport Journalism) and presented at conferences in the UK and Holland (Association of Journalism Education 2018, Play The Game 2017).
He has been BA Sport Journalism course leader since 2017, and teaches both practical and theoretical modules across BA (Hons) Sport Journalism, BA (Hons) Journalism and MA Sport Journalism courses. He leads units in Sport Journalism in Context, Introduction to Sport Journalism, Social Media and Sport Journalism, Sport Media Relations and Club Communications, Sports Writing, Professional Practice, Sport Journalism in Practice, Live Sport Coverage, Advanced Sport Journalism and Power, Politics and the Sport Media.
Owen was awarded the NCTJ (National Council for the Training of Journalists) Innovation of the Year in 2018 for the Premier League Apprenticeship collaboration with Brighton and Hove Albion, and was Highly Commended for the same award in 2021 for the Virtual Exchange partnership with the University of Florida.
Owen has a professional background in journalism. He was a news journalist with Northcliffe Media newspapers in the South East for three years before moving to SportBusiness International magazine, where he eventually became editor.
