Personal profile

Research interests

I am a Reader in Anthropology and Psychology in the School of Applied Social Science. The cornerstone of my research has been the production of monographs and publications in three related fields: violence and conflict in Pakistan’s megacity of Karachi; transnational Afghan refugee migration and mobility in urban Britain; mental disorder and psychosocial intervention. My books include ‘Mohajir Militancy in Pakistan’ (2010, 2012, Routledge), ‘Cityscapes of Violence in Karachi’ (2017, Oxford University Press; Hurst & Co.); and ‘Mental Disorder: Anthropological Insights’ (2017, University of Toronto Press). I am currently completing a fourth monograph entitled ‘Arc of the Journeymen: Afghan Migrants in England’. I am also conducting ANRS funded research on illegal Pakistani migrants’ with HIV and Hepatitis in Paris. I am actively looking for Phd students in the broad areas of refugee and irregular migration, mobility, and mental distress and disorder, spanning the geography of South and South-East Asia, and Europe.

Supervisory Interests

I am interested in supervising students in the interdisciplinary areas of migration, war, conflict, violence, refugees, transnationalism, ethnicity, mobilities, cities, migrant health and mental health, social inequalities, and environmental violence- particularly those working on Pakistan, Afghanistan, and migrant populations in Europe. My past and present students also work on very different kinds of topic, including race and sexuality, autophenomenography and psychotherapy, childrens’s violence to parents, adolescent refugee mental health, refugee women and government yoga, honour based violence and the British police, and FGM in the UK.
