Personal profile

Research interests

My research is interdisciplinary and broadly covers the areas of nationalism, language ideologies, gender and identity. One particular focus of my research is the exploration of women’s narratives in Catalonia during the Franco dictatorship and the transition to democracy, integrating oral history with a discourse analytical approach, culminating in the monograph Language Attitudes, Identity and Migration in Catalonia: what the women have to say (Sussex Academic Press). The book won the Premi Crítica Serra d'Or award 2020 in the Catalan Studies section. I am also interested in language use on social media and previous work in this area includes discourses of activism and social protest. I am currently working on two projects: one (with Dr Federica Formato) on digital masculinities that explores online constructions of traditional and subordinate masculinities and the other investigates the intersections of language, nationalism, secessionism and globalisation in Catalonia.

Supervisory Interests

I supervise PhD students interested in exploring language and discourse in a variety of contexts and in particular in relation to language attitudes and ideologies and discourses of nationalism, oral history, (critical) discourse analysis and narrative analysis. I welcome research proposals on any of the following areas:

  • Language attitudes and ideologies
  • Discourses of nationalism; national identity; intersections of class/ethnicity/gender; political discourse
  • Public participation in political discourse; grassroots movements
  • Discourses of populism
  • Oral history
  • Digital and mediated communications
  • Digital masculinities
