Personal profile
Scholarly biography
Dr Mahmood Alam is a principal lecturer within Built Environment division of the School of Environment and Technology. Mahmood joined University of Brighton in 2017. He has previous experience of working on research and knowledge transfer projects. Before joining the University of Brighton, he worked as Researcher in Ecological Built Environment Research and Enterprise (EBERE) group at Cardiff Metropolitan University. Mahmood’s research interests include vacuum insulation panel, composite insulation panel, building performance evaluation and energy use in buildings. He has published number of research papers in reputed international journals and presented research work at several international conferences.
Research interests
My research interests are in the area of achieving energy efficiency in the Built Environment particularly applying low/zero carbon solutions. Recently, I have been working on developing advance vacuum insulation panels and evaluating their application in buildings components for improving energy efficiency. I also conduct research on the topics of building performance evaluation and energy and economic assessment of energy efficient building retrofit measures.
Approach to teaching
I am currently responsible for teaching Indoor Environment and Building Services and Sustainable Construction subjects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. I believe students learn best when fully engaged with the teaching content. I always plan my teaching sessions to encourage student’s involvement by including individual and groups activities in my lectures and encourage two-way discussion through question and answer sessions. I use range of activities including lectures, group workshops, and drop-in-sessions, formative assignments tasks and practical exercises to engage students in the class. I expect from my students to prepare for the lessons in advance and participate in the class discussion.
Supervisory Interests
I am interested in supervising postgraduate research students in the following areas: Vacuum Insulation Panels; Building Performance Evaluation; Energy Efficiency in Built Environment; Building retrofit
