Personal profile

Research interests

Exploring the collaborative nature of creating art (visual and performance-based) sits at the heart of my practice as an Artist and Arts Manager. I am particularly interested in the independent arts sector and how networks play a key role in the facilitation of informal peer-to-peer learning. I am interested in how networks develop, grow and thrive sustainably.

Approach to teaching

For me teaching is very much a shared experience requiring an inclusive open-minded approach and honest dialogue. I believe that collaboration, knowledge exchange and employability skills development are core tools to create an inspiring learning environment.

I identify with the role of the facilitator enabling reflective learning both in the classroom and on industry placements. I aim to build connections and networks that will support students to thrive in Higher Education and beyond.

Knowledge exchange

Knowledge exchange is core to my practice as an Arts Manager supporting artists, theatre makers and arts organisations.

My areas of expertise include:

  • strategic planning
  • fundraising and investment
  • building partnerships and teams
  • marketing and audience development
  • negotiating contracts
  • project management
  • financial planning and management

Peers sharing experiences and knowledge with each other through networks enable continuous development of our practice so that we can respond to the individual needs of our clients and the wider sector.

Over the last 12 years I have delivered:

  • 30+ performance-based commissions and projects
  • 11 exhibitions
  • four new visual arts commissions
  • two national visual arts conferences
  • two national open space events for independent producers
  • participated in two professional development programmes

I have presented work and events on local, national and international platforms, within site-specific contexts, in the outdoors as well as within conventional theatre and gallery spaces.

In 2012/13 I co-lead an Arts Council England funded research project to connect independent producers across the UK through SOUPing - a model of working to build knowledge, share skills and encourage camaraderie between independent producers that I co-founded with Independent Producers Emily Coleman and Ruth Dudman.
