Personal profile
Scholarly biography
I am a Lecturer in the School of Sport and Health Sciences, where I also serve as the Practice Learning Leader (PLL) for Mental Health Nursing and Adult Nursing. In this capacity, I am responsible for high-level partnership management, quality assurance, and driving pedagogical innovation within clinical placements.
My route into academia was non-traditional; I joined the NHS in my late thirties following a diverse career that included roles as an actress and a personal trainer. This varied background has heavily influenced my professional focus on communication, human connection, and motivation.
I am a qualified Mental Health Nurse and a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor). Prior to joining the University of Brighton, I worked as a Practice Teacher for Health Visiting, where I led on Perinatal Mental Health. It was this experience of supporting students and practice assessors in the field that inspired my transition into Higher Education, driven by a desire to enhance the bridge between academic theory and clinical practice.
Research interests
My research interests are grounded in my clinical background and focus on the psychological and human elements of healthcare. My primary areas of interest include:
Perinatal Mental Health: This was the specific focus of my Masters dissertation and remains a core specialism.
Trauma and Personality Disorders: I am interested in trauma-informed care and the management of personality disorders.
The Human Dimension of Nursing: I explore how human reactions, communication styles, and empathy impact the patient experience and nursing practice.
Public Health: I maintain a strong scholarly interest in public health strategies and the reduction of health inequalities.
Approach to teaching
I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and hold a Post Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP)My teaching philosophy is built on inclusivity and engagement. Having come from a background in performance and coaching, I strive to make my sessions as interactive and relatable as possible. My goal is to "peak interest" in every subject, ensuring that even complex topics like public health are accessible and engaging for students.
I utilize an inquiry-based approach, particularly when teaching subjects such as Safeguarding. Rather than simply delivering facts, I encourage students to think through scenarios independently, fostering the critical thinking skills required for autonomous practice. Above all, I aim to be an approachable and supportive educator who brings out the best in students through encouragement and safe learning environments.
