Approach to teaching
I joined the Social Work teaching team as a Senior Lecturer in September 2024. I am a registered Social Worker and still work two days per week for Brighton and Hove City Council as a Senior Social Worker in the Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) Team.
I qualified as a social worker in 1997, and my practice experience has including Team Leader in a homelessness outreach service and Senior Practitioner in East Sussex’s Substance Misuse Service. I became an Approved Mental Health Professional in 2011 and have worked in the dedicated AMHP hub for both East Sussex and Brighton local authorities as well as delivering teaching on the AMHP course.
I have always been passionate about practice education and was Practice Educator to both social work students and AMHP trainees. I spent two years as a Professional Educator in East Sussex County Council Social Work Education Team, overseeing the Assessed Year in Supported Employment ( ASYE) programme. I trained and became accredited as an Action Learning Facilitator, delivering Action Learning Sets
My approach to teaching is to ensure academic lecturing is brought to life through real life practice scenarios and dilemmas. My personal approach is facilitative encouraging student debate and reflection on ethical dilemmas, rights and risks.
