Personal profile

Scholarly biography

I am Head of the Learning and Teaching Hub, leading a team that works strategically with Schools and professional services colleagues across the University to embed the Education and Student Experience strategic priorities, focusing particularly on support for academic colleagues in relation to learning and teaching enhancement and innovation. I am part of the Education and Student Experience leadership team and Chair of the Learning and Teaching Steering Group. Over the past few years I have led a programme of work on enhancing the assessment and feedback policies and processes across the institution, including marking criteria, use of Generative AI in assessment, a structured feedback model, and developing an institutional assessment brief. My areas of specialism and research are professional development for course leaders, curriculum design and enhancement and assessment and feedback.

I joined the University of Brighton in 2001 as a lecturer in media and information studies, and have held a number of roles, including Course Leader and Head of Division of Information and Media Studies. In 2009, I joined the (then) Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT) to lead the University's PGCertificate in Learning and Teaching, and set up a series of development workshops for course leaders. In 2013, as Professional Programmes Lead, I established the University's Professional and Recognition (PRD) Scheme, accredited by Advance HE, which enables staff to gain a category of Fellowship. In 2018, I became Assistant Head of the CLT, taking over as Interim Head in May, before becoming Head of the reconfigured Learning and Teaching Hub in January 2021.

I hold Advance HE Principal Fellowship and have a number of external roles, including as external examiner for other Fellowship schemes, Fellowship Reviewer for Advance HE and Advance HE consultant, supporting institutions with developing accredited recognition schemes.

Research interests

My previous research was in the field of library and information science, and I specialised in evaluation research and research into public libraries. Since moving into the academic development field I have focused my research interests in assessment and feedback and curriculum enhancement. I have participated in a number of QAA-funded cross-institutional enhancement projects, including two focusing on inclusivity in assessment.
