Scholarly biography

Dr Jonathan Salvage is the Academic Lead for the Image and Analysis Unit (IAU) within the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences.

This involves the development and delivery of research, teaching, and consultancy, utilising scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM).

He is a Fellow of The Royal Microscopical Society (FRMS), and has been actively researching biomaterials since 1999.

Research interests

The central theme of my research is the development of novel biomaterials.

This encompasses the fields of nanotechnology, polymers, nanoparticles, nanomedicine, pharmaceutics, cell biology, microbiology, and advanced microscopy.

Approach to teaching

I teach electron microscopy, pharmaceutics, and biomaterials based subjects to undergraduate and postgraduate students.

I do this via large student cohort lecture based presentations, large group practical laboratory classes, and small focused group interactive sessions, using a combination of visual, written, and spoken communication with students.

Supervisory Interests

I am interested in supervising postgraduate research students in the field of biomaterials, encompassing nanotechnology, polymers, nanoparticles, nanomedicine, pharmaceutics, cell biology, microbiology, and advanced microscopy.
