Research interests

As a dedicated practitioner and educator in Film and Media production, my expertise spans a comprehensive range of practical disciplines crucial to contemporary media creation. My specializations include:

  • VFX Acquisition, Creation, and Supervision: This encompasses everything from on-set data capture and plate photography to the meticulous crafting of visual effects and overseeing their seamless integration into the final product.
  • Post-Production Editing, Colour Management, and Colour Grading: I possess a deep understanding of editorial workflows, ensuring a cohesive narrative, alongside advanced skills in colour science to manage and grade footage for optimal aesthetic and technical consistency across various platforms.
  • Camera, Lighting, and D.I.T Supervision: My experience extends to guiding camera and lighting departments to achieve specific visual styles, and functioning as a Digital Imaging Technician (D.I.T) to manage on-set data, monitor image quality, and establish robust colour pipelines from production through to post-production.
  • Sound Design and Editing: I am adept at creating immersive auditory experiences, from foley and sound effects to dialogue clean-up and mixing, all contributing to the emotional impact and clarity of the project.
  • Animation and Motion Graphics Design: This involves the creation of dynamic visual elements, including 2D and 3D animation, titles, and informational graphics, enhancing storytelling and audience engagement.
  • 3D Modelling, Texture Painting, and LOOK Development: My skills include the creation of detailed 3D assets, applying realistic textures, and developing the overall visual appearance (LOOK Dev) of characters, objects, and environments.
  • Real-time Engine Environment Design: I have expertise in designing and building compelling virtual environments within real-time game engines, applicable to interactive media, virtual production, and architectural visualization.
  • Conceptualisation, Design, and Production Management: Beyond hands-on technical skills, I am proficient in the initial conceptualization and design phases of projects, as well as the practical management of production workflows to ensure efficient and successful execution.

Feature Films:

  • 'Mind-Set' (2023) Dir: Mikey Murray (UK Cinema and VOD Release): On this project, I undertook multiple critical roles, serving as the D.I.T, overseeing and executing VFX as a VFX supervisor and artist, and performing the final colour grade as the Colourist. This multifaceted involvement ensured a consistent visual aesthetic from acquisition to final delivery.
  • 'Lapwing' (2021) Dir: Philip Stevens (International Cinema and VOD Release): My contributions to this film were substantial, encompassing both creative and technical aspects as the VFX Supervisor and Artist, handling the intricate colour grading, and designing the film's titles.

Short Films:

  • 'Going Country' (2019) Dir: Philip Stevens: My involvement here focused on the technical and aesthetic refinement of the visuals, working as the D.I.T, performing the colour grade, and creating the film's titles.
  • 'Natalie' (2017) Dir: Mikey Murray: For this short, I contributed significantly to the visual polish, acting as both the Colourist and a VFX Artist.

Series:

  • 'Let's Get Macho' (2018) [Comedy Series]: I was responsible for the colour grading of this comedy series, ensuring a consistent and appropriate visual tone throughout.

Advertising (Book Trailers):

 

My work in advertising has primarily focused on creating compelling promotional trailers for HarperCollins France, for author Giles Kristian, blending visual effects, colour grading, editing, and motion graphics to bring literary narratives to life:

  • 'Ta Seule Issue' (2023) [Book Trailer] Giles Kristian, for Harper Collins France: For this project, I served as a key creative and technical lead, handling VFX artistry, colour grading, editing, and motion graphics animation to produce an engaging promotional piece.
  • 'Where Blood Runs Cold' (2022) [Book Trailer] Giles Kristian: Similar to the above, I was responsible for the comprehensive visual production of this trailer, including VFX, colour grading, editing, and motion graphics animation.
  • 'Lancelot' (2019) [Book Trailer] Giles Kristian: My work on this trailer also involved a full suite of post-production skills: VFX artistry, colour grading, editing, and motion graphics animation, contributing to its impactful promotion.



Knowledge exchange

In addition to my instructional role at the University of Brighton and my professional engagements within the Independent Film and Media sectors, I am committed to disseminating specialized skills and workflows developed through my practice-based work. This endeavor aims to enhance accessibility and inclusivity within these industries by sharing practices and knowledge often difficult to acquire. The dissemination of my expertise takes various forms, including:

  • Guest Talks and Presentations at Film Festivals, Summits, and Industry Conventions
  • Live Online Presentations and Workshops for Media Practitioners and Educators globally

Furthermore, I am dedicated to fostering collaboration among students, staff, and practitioners across Europe and internationally. I believe that the dissemination of practice-based knowledge and information is crucial for empowering young individuals to leverage the emergent opportunities afforded by contemporary digital technologies.

I have actively participated in Europe-wide, collaborative Knowledge Exchange programmes for ERASMUS, OnCREATE, and European Youth Awards, as part of the co_LAB Collaborative Media Laboratory. In this capacity, I have supervised, participated in, and facilitated collaborative projects between students and academics, working alongside colleagues and students from across Europe.

I have also been keen to share both my specialist Media Practice and Pedagogical Practice via international platforms and summits as part of the Adobe Education Leader programme.
