Personal profile

Research interests

My research interests centre around the role of dress in the performance of country music. My PhD research focuses on the 'Nudie suit' (named after its originator, the designer Nudie Cohn), a style worn predominantly by male performers in country music that juxtaposes the construction and materials of bespoke tailoring with jewel colours, sparkling rhinestones, pictorial embroidery and the styling of the American West. In tracing the development of the Nudie suit from expression of flamboyant showmanship to signifier of authenticity, I link it to changing constructs of masculinity in country music and in the American South in the second half of the twentieth century.  I am also interested in western wear more generally, and particularly in the elements of design hybridity and global exchange it expresses.

In addition to my research, I am a designer and maker of western shirts. My designs are made from fabrics by Liberty of London and are often worn by musicians. My brand is Dandy & Rose.
