Dr Ikenna Ajiero is a lecturer in the School of Architecture, Technology and Engineering (ATE), Built Environment subject area, University of Brighton. Ikenna joined university of Brighton (UoB) in 2023 as a Lecturer in Building Information Modelling. Before joining UoB, he worked as a senior lecturer in the Department of Building, Faculty of Environmental studies (FES), University of Uyo. Ikenna is a corporate member of the Nigeria Institute of Building (NIOB) and registered by the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) as a professional builder. To drive sustainability in UK industrial water use, Ikenna developed the i-Water Benchmarking Tool for the United Kingdom Business Council for Sustainable Development (UK-BCSD) as part of his PhD. Ikenna also won the 2015 Michael Ventris memorial award in Architecture from the Architectural Association, London.
My research interests are in Building Information Modelling, Virtual Reality, Augmented reality, Mixed Reality and Smart Buildings. My focus is on building capacity in applications of BIM in separate disciplines of the AEC industry and understanding of the associated immersive environments. With the current and evolving technological transformations in the AEC sector, I am equally interested in digital twin for building performance simulation, real time monitoring and maintenance. The substance of my research interests is discovering smarter, sustainable, and innovative planning, designing, construction and management strategies in the AEC industry.
I am interested in supervising undergraduate and postgraduate research in BIM in any AEC discipline, digital construction, smart buildings, construction technology, water and wastewater management and energy in buildings.
I currently teach BIM, Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD), Building Technology, Building Services and Indoor-environment-related modules to students in the school of ATE. My teaching pedagogy is dynamic, chiefly depending on the module, students' skill levels and learning preferences. I create a balance between the teacher-centred and the active learning approaches, both of which constitute the fundamental educational theories. To elicit responses that clearly demonstrate measurable understanding, I carryout strategic planning of my lessons to achieve excellent class management. This is what I identify as my module roadmap. The roadmap which contains details of pre, live and post lecture activities is designed to provide specific tasks that will help students prepare for lectures, engage actively in guided constructivist, collaborative and integrative activities during live sessions, and create inquiry-based and reflective tasks to encourage independent deeper understanding of specific concepts. To properly measure learning outcomes, I periodically administer formative assessments. This consequently helps to support struggling students, encourage more active participation, and prepare students for summative assessments.
