Awards

  • Teaching Excellence Award, July 2008
  • Brighton Innovation Award, June 2007 (highly commended)

Approach to teaching

I have taught structures and design at various levels and the romanticised definition of Civil Engineering, which is “to engineer civilisations”, fuels my enthusiasm for educating the next generation of civil engineers. In my experience, practical and hands on lessons will keep students engaged, hence, my lectures are informed by my design practice and research results. I treat my students as “Civil Engineers in training” and I expect them to act like practitioners. In 2008, I won Excellence in Facilitating and Empowering Learning Awards and I have been nominated for inspirational lecturer by students.

Research interests

I am interested in the role of civil engineering in hazards mitigation and the relevance of structural engineers to sustainable design of buildings, as well as computer-integrated analysis, design and fabrication of structures. I am equally interested in computer aided (or blended) learning and project based learning to improving students' visualisation, drawing and design skills. I am passionate about developing a package of technical and organizational measures (including public-private partnership and community engagement) to address housing crisis and housing inequality by successful transfer of key technology features and due attention to localisation/adaptation.
