Gary joined RDS South East in February 2020 and is the Strategic Lead for Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement. He provides advice on guidance on all aspects of patient and public involvement in health and social care research.
Prior to this he spent the last few years as a Senior Public Involvement Manager at INVOLVE, which was the National Institute for Health Research’s (NIHR) national advisory group for patient and public involvement in research. Gary led on INVOLVE’s programme of work on co-production in research which resulted in the NIHR’s much cited ‘Guidance on co-producing a research project’. Co-production has become a key aspect of Gary’s work and he works in partnership with a group of organisations to deliver an annual event on co-production. While at RDS South East he has developed a podcast series ‘My Co-production Podcast!’
During his time at INVOLVE he developed an international profile, speaking at several international events and, in partnership with colleagues from across the world, established an International Patient and Public Involvement Network which seeks to share experiences, knowledge and expertise on patient and public involvement across the globe. He also a member of NIHR’s Global Health Community Engagement and Involvement Group.
Prior to this he has worked in health and social care research as well as the development and regulation of ethical cultures and processes in organisations.
