Research interests

Dr Frauke Behrendt's research contributes to the understanding of both the design process and the user experience of emerging/innovative mobile and digital technologies.

Her findings have impact in the areas of media, mobility, sustainability, interaction design, sound studies, intelligent transport and smart cities. Behrendt's results and insights translate into policy, design and teaching.

Research interests

Dr Frauke Behrendt is a Principal Lecturer in Media Studies at the University of Brighton and Deputy Head of School for Research and Enterprise in the School of Media. She is also the founding director of the Centre for Digital Media Cultures. Behrendt let the EPSRC-funded research project ‘Smart e-bikes – understanding how commuters and communities engage with electrically-assisted cycling’, the 'Intelligent Transport Solutions for Social Inclusion' project, and the research on the NetPark project.

Dr Behrendt is a Fellow of Theatrum Mundi and was on the on the Steering Committee of the EU COST IC0601 Action on Sonic Interaction Design (SID). For this, she co-curated an exhibition on ‘Sonic Interaction Design’ at the Norwegian Museum of Science, Technology and Medicine in Oslo (29 May 2011 - 21 August 2011) in connection with NIME 2011.  She was on the Steering Committee of the International Workshop of Mobile Music Technology.

Previously, Dr Behrendt held positions as Research Fellow at the Cultures of the Digital Economy Institute (CoDE), Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, at the University of Sussex and as Visiting Assistant Professor at the Digital+Media MFA program at the Rhode Island School of Design (US).

Supervisory Interests

My supervisory interests cover the broad areas of digital and data culture, mobility and transport, sustainability and environment, culture and heritage, sound and multi-sensory media. I have expertise in supervising theory and practice-based PhDs, and also interdicsiplinary work, including media and communication studies, social science, art and HCI, plus involvment of external partners/stakeholders. My methods expertise covers qualitative and mixed methods including interviews, focus groups, case studies, ethnographic approaches, hard- and software development for data capture, critical discourse analysis, sonic approaches, interventions and experiments, NVIVO. I am currently supervising six PhD students inlcuding SEAHA and SCDTP-funded projects, and have served as internal and external examiner on PhDs.
