Personal profile

Approach to teaching

After a 20+ year career in mental health, I joined the social work team at the University of Brighton in 2011. I teach on the PG Dip Approved Mental Health course and on various aspects of the BSc and MSc programmes, in particular the BSc Dissertation module.

I believe that students learn better when they are feeling happy and encouraged. I try to include experiential aspects to all my teaching and ensure that students are given opportunities to explore their interests as well as being clear on what is expected of them in terms of any assessments.

Research interests

My research interests mostly focus on issues of gender, sexuality and mental health. In particular, I am interested in the power of psychiatry to police difference, and in social work students' preparedness to work with LGBTQ+ populations.
