Eloise Calandre works with photography, writing, performance, digital mixed reality, moving image and drawing. Her work focuses on interplay between image and material form and explores positioning of the body in relation to place, time and encounter, often producing site-responsive work. Her research explores an interplay between critical theory and creative writing.
Thematic areas of enquiry currently include:
Fantastic of female experience; age and metamorphosis
Shape-shifting, movement and dance
The role of Light & Shadow in photography’s visual haptics
Residual Encounter, the body’s location in time & place
Seeing the Unseen; histories of mixed reality & illusion
Mobile Materiality & Glitch
Virtuality; relationships between digital space and material ephemera
Eloise teaches Fine Art and Fashion Communication undergraduate courses, where she is active in curriculum development, with an interest in inclusive practice pedagogies. She is L5 module lead within Fine Art.
Her research informs practice-based and theory-based teaching incorporating the following: public exhibition practice, the body & space, intersectional feminisms, photography, materiality & time, lens-based practice & illusion, contemporary fashion photography, fashion space & performance, future bodies, intuition, playfulness & material enquiry, with specialist skills in analogue and digital photography, moving image, 3D digital space and mixed reality, writing and drawing.
Eloise holds a Higher Education Academy Fellowship and has worked as a lecturer across a number of institutions across the subject areas of Fine Art and Fashion & Textiles.
