Dr Keith Turvey is Reader in learning and teaching theory. His research focuses on the complexity and human agency at the heart of pedagogy. He has led and collaborated both nationally and internationally, on research into innovation in teacher education, and technology supported learning. Keith is particularly interested in how digital technologies bring both opportunities and tensions to the processes of education and professional learning. His research in this area has impacted on current debates and guidance about the effective use of digital technologies during the global pandemic.

In addressing the complexities of professional learning and teacher development, Keith has developed expertise in methodological innovation, namely; narrative and life history, design-based and mixed methods of education research.

Keith has written over 20 peer-reviewed outputs in international research journals and handbooks. He contributes to academic citizenship through peer-review for a number of international research journals and has conducted workshops on academic writing and innovative methodologies for doctoral students and early career researchers. His research monograph - Narrative Ecologies; Teachers as Pedagogical Toolmakers – was published by Routledge in 2013.

Keith graduated with a BA (Hons) in Music from Dartington College of Arts (1986). On gaining a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in 1987, he began a career in primary education, working as a class teacher, and then senior teacher in various schools and roles across the South East, London and abroad, including Qatar, and Nepal (Voluntary Service Overseas). After 15 years in primary education, he joined the School of Education, University of Brighton as Senior Lecturer in 2003. In 2004, Keith completed an Advanced Diploma in Professional Studies at the Institute of Education, University of London and an MA Education at the University of Brighton. From 2006 he studied for PhD under the supervision of Professor Avril Loveless (University of Brighton) and Professor Norbert Pachler (UCL, IOE). The title of PhD was conferred in 2011 with no amendments. Keith was appointed to Reader in 2022.

Keith is interested in supervising doctoral students in various aspects relating to teacher education and development, pedagogy and innovation, digital technologies in higher education and technology supported pedagogy.

Keith is co-leader of the Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD) and an experienced doctoral supervisor and examiner. He has conducted doctoral examinations both nationally and internationally and has supervised students to successful completion.

In his approach to teacher education and development, Keith aims to put students' critical thinking and reflection at the centre of the process to develop their knowledge understanding and skills. He is co-course leader of the Professional Doctorate in Education. He also teaches on a number of programmes in the School of Education, currently:
