Approach to Teaching

I enjoy teaching particularly where I can apply the knowledge to specific problems currently being faced in real life situations. I teach students at level 4 and level 5 and also enjoy supervising students’ research projects at both undergraduate and post-graduate level.

I am passionate about housing and engage students with interactive sessions, utilising the experience gained when I undertook my Post Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning.

For most of my modules I am able to draw on my experience gained before entering academia when I managed large portfolios of client property.

Students seem to do well in my modules, they tell me they find me approachable and so am able to resolve issues which they do not understand. Many of the resources we use in class are web-based to reflect the types of resources available to students when the leave university and start their work in industry.

Research Interests

My research focuses around the sustainable built environment and the needs of the people it is designed to support. From research about food and water within the environment, my research journey has continued into the suitability of new housing including specifically; issues of air quality related to the ubiquitous task of drying laundry.

In addition my research looks at sustainable systems for commercial buildings both considering renewable technologies for the creation of energy and the fabric first approach for minimising energy requirements. I have also been involved in research into embedding new technologies into Built Environment education and am currently working with the team delivering Brightnest- the solar decathlon house.

Fingerprint Fingerprint is based on mining the text of the person's scientific documents to create an index of weighted terms, which defines the key subjects of each individual researcher.
