Approach to teaching

2018-19 Module Leader for 'Developing International Strategic and Change Capabilities' (MBA capstone module) and Module Leader for 'Creativity in Enterprise' (optional second-year undergraduate module).

Still technically an early career researcher (in my fifties), with an interest in how creative thinking approaches allow organisations to solve ‘messy’ business challenges, develop more focused & highly differentiated strategies, and rally internal energies behind clear goals.

Initially worked at Brighton Business School from 2011 on an unpaid or visiting lecturer basis, developing a range of short workshops & lectures in the areas of high performance teams and creativity for undergraduate and post-graduate / MBA students.

Covered the Marketing in an International Context (MSc) module during 2013 due to sickness.

In 2013, co-developed an interactive second-year undergraduate module, Creativity in Enterprise. This was designed to increase the use of creative mindsets across all functions in organisations, improve the tangible value of students to future employers and prepare students for work in an increasingly complex and unpredictable economic environment. Took over as Module Leader in 2015.

In conjunction with gaining Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in 2014 and Fellowship in 2017, developed an Active Learning approach (i4PDF, presented using active learning to colleagues at three Learning & Teaching conferences to date) and an integrative model for driving creativity to solve messy organisational challenges (Curious Cloud, which is also delivered as a short workshop for organisations).

In 2017 applied these methodologies within a number of Master's level modules: International Strategy (full time MBA), Developing International Strategic and Change Capability (full time and part time MBA) and Turnaround Management (part of Strategy, Planning & Commissioning, for the Public Service Masters). Additionally supported a seminar group of first year students through their year-through Business Project and supported three former Creativity in Enterprise students through their placement year.

In 2018 took over as Module Leader for Developing International Strategic and Change Capabilities and will be supporting one International student through their placement year

Knowledge exchange

I fully embrace Charles Handy’s concept of a portfolio career, mixing my part-time teaching with a niche management consulting offering around ‘people, development and change’ and also a ‘fee-free’ offering which is designed to help budget-less executives and entrepreneurs solve their 'messy' business challenges.  

The three strands of this business model are designed to drive me along the learning curve a little more quickly and allow me to bring much richer insights to bear in client interactions in each strand.

Prior to starting my consultancy in 2007 I ran ‘direct experience’ marketing agencies for 12 years, working with blue chip clients and being responsible for delivering an annual average of around three million high-quality face-to-face consumer interactions.
