Personal profile

Scholarly biography

I am a Principal Lecturer in Marketing and the Undergraduate Programme Leader at the Brighton Business School, where I teach across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules. I joined the Business School in September 2014 to design and lead the new BSc Marketing Management degree programme, moving to the Undergraduate Programme Leader role in September 2018.

Prior to joining the Business School, I was Senior Lecturer and Academic Programme Centre Leader in the School of Sport and Service Management and had held a number of Course Leader positions with SaSM prior to the programme leader role.

I have extensive experience teaching across a range of marketing subjects including marketing principles, planning and strategy, marketing communications and PR, competitive marketing, marketing analytics, digital marketing, content marketing and futurism for marketers. I also teach across a range of Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) modules.

Passionate about the marketing subject and discipline, I ensure that my students approach marketing in an innovative and creative way. I encourage them to be remarkable – be creative and innovative, and be worth talking about.

I have been told that I am annoyingly positive but great at inspiring and enthusing through my teaching and consultancy work. I am passionate about the professional development of individuals (particularly marketers) and once spoke at a TEDx event on the need for risk taking in education, an area that I continue to explore and research.

I founded the student agency ‘Bright Young Things’ (BYT) as a vehicle to ensure my students get applied experiences as part of their degrees and strongly believe that learning comes from doing. My final year futurism module is about getting students to think ahead as it’s what’s happening in 20 years time that will become important to how they work (and survive in the job market).

I’ve been published several times by the Association for the Advancement of Relationship Marketing and by the Learning and Teaching Support Network. I have Masters in Marketing (2002) with specialisms in strategy, planning and law, and am a member of both the CIM and CIPR. I have a PG Certificate in Teaching and Learning (2003).

I have professional experience in Account Management, Communications, Research and Trend Watching, and have undertaken a number of freelance projects for advertising and PR agencies. I have also advised a number of higher educational intuitions on course design and development.

Research interests

My current research focus, which I intend to use to complete my PhD by Publication, centers around teaching, learning and assessment in marketing, and the design of the undergraduate marketing curriculum.  Specific areas currently being explored include:

  • Experiential approaches to teaching and learning in marketing
  • Use of applied experiences to develop undergraduate students’ professional practice
  • Students as professional practitioners
  • Marketing degree course design and assessment methods
  • Marketing employer expectations of marketing degrees and marketing students

I also have some random interests in the history and development of the marketing concept, the application of battlefield marketing approaches in Higher Education and the credibility of marketing communications.
