Research interests

Research interests include visualizing complex data, automated data visualization, theoretical techniques for visualizing data, visualizing social networks, robotics AI.

Recently, I've been working on hand tracking and gesture recognition to control software. I'm currently leading the development of the Robotics AI lab in Computing and would be interested in any projects that contribute to Robotics and/or AI. Research in Human-Robot interaction is of particular interest.

Scholarly biography

Almas completed his BSc Computer Science (Games) with 1st class Honours and the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in HE at the University of Brighton. Since then he has been teaching on Game Development and Software Engineering courses.

Almas completed his PhD in Computer Science at the University of Brighton and continues his research in Software Engineering and Computer Science. Almas is currently a Subject Co-Lead of the Computing and Mathematics subject area.

Approach to teaching

My approach to teaching involves striking a balance between theory and its practical use. I typically open with a leading question on a given topic to allow students to understand the process one takes to get to a software solution. This is followed by explaining the prerequsite theory and finished with remarks on implementation details.

I understand and appreciate that each student has their own approach to learning. Hence, for most topics featured in the lectures, I provide, in addition to standard lecture notes, written tutorials and online video materials. This allows students to cover the material at their own pace. Moreover, I frequently organise game jams and hackathons to enable students to practise their new skills and teamwork in a less formal environment.

Supervisory Interests

I am particularly interested in implementation-driven projects and those that convert theory into practice that draw knowledge from the following areas: Computer Science (AI, Data Visualisation), Software Engineering, and Game Development. Recently, I've been working on hand tracking and gesture recognition to control software. It would be interesting to see how this area can be extended to also control hardware. I'm currently leading the development of the Robotics AI lab in Computing and would be interested in any projects that contribute to Robotics and/or AI.
