Scholarly biography

Jack is a Principal Lecturer in Law and is the Undergraduate Law Courses Leader. Jack has a LLB (hons) Law from the University of Westminster and has a LLM in Legal Aspects of Medical Practice from Cardiff University. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and has a PgCert in Higher Education from the University of Westminster. He has a PhD in Reproductive Medicine and Jurisprudence from the University of Westminster. Jack joined the University of Brighton in 2018 having previously held a lectureship at the University of Westminster.

Approach to teaching

Jack's teaching areas of expertise are Healthcare Law, Law of Torts and Legal Skills at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is the joint Module Leader of Law of Torts and Healthcare Law and Ethics on the LLB programme as well as Human Rights and Healthcare on the LLM. He is a fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy. Jack has previously taught a range of LLB modules including Equity and Trusts; Mental Health Law; Medical Law and Ethics and Disability Law.

Jack’s teaching revolves around encouraging students to debate and develop confidence in their analysis of complex and controversial issues. This is done through the flipped classroom where students are encouraged to take responsibility for sessions. This approach has been well received by students, having been nominated for the EFEL award and the Law Society Teaching award. Jack has also led on a number of projects concerned with the development of course wide learning and teaching strategies as well as assessment and feedback design

Research interests

Jack’s research is predominantly focused on the relationship between moral philosophy and healthcare law. His work is focused on Ethical Rationalism, Rights and Autonomy. Recently, his work has been focused on the role of rights within domestic and international law from the perspective of deontological ethics. He has worked with internal and external colleagues on projects focused on Trans rights within the criminal justice system and the challenges facing human rights law.

Jack has acted as a peer reviewer for monographs or manuscripts/proposals including the Oxford Journal of Legal Studies, Oxford University Press and Edinburgh University Press. Jack was a member of the School REF panel responsible for grading law papers.

Supervisory Interests

Jack would be delighted to supervise students in the areas of his research interests, namely Healthcare Law, Tort Law, Mental Health/Disability Law and Legal Theory.  He holds experience in supervising PhD projects to completion in the MPhil/PhD register, whilst he has also examined PhD work internally and externally.
