Jayne Lloyd is a Senior Lecturer and Course Leader of MA Inclusive Arts Practice. She is an artist and researcher who works across sculpture, drawing and performance in her own arts practice and in the development and realisation of inclusive arts projects.

Jayne’s research and practice is situated at the intersection between inclusive arts and art made for exhibition. She is interested in the role of arts-based research in developing, understanding and evidencing the role of arts practices in a range of settings. Her research interests focus on the role arts and artists can play in the lives of older people, people living with dementia and those living with other disabilities. She has explored the interventions and dialogues that can be created between arts activities, practices and materials and everyday and health and social care environments. During her practice-based PhD she developed multi-sensory activities and environments that combined everyday and arts practices to engage those living and working in residential care settings and to question and shift experiences of institutional care.

Jayne has published articles and book chapters about her research that contribute to the rethinking of negative understandings of walking undertaken by people living with dementia, the role of objects in supporting and communicating a sense of self, and the conceptualisation of performances of everyday activities in arts sessions as a form of inter-relational self-care.

Jayne Lloyd has written papers that have been presented at conferences and published in academic books and journals including the Journal of Applied Arts in Health and Research in Drama Education.

Jayne regularly exhibits and completes residencies and site-specific commissions nationally and internationally. Recent exhibitions include My Blue China at Fondation d’entreprise Bernardaud, Limoges (2015) and The Musée Ariana (2016). In 2013 she was selected for a residency at the 501 Artspace, Chongqing, and has completed residencies in spaces as diverse as day centres for people with complex learning difficulties, an empty office block and a furniture warehouse.

Jayne has a practice-based PhD in participatory arts. She sits on the Engagement Committee for the charity, Paintings in Hospitals, a charity that exhibits art in health and social care sites, and advises on the development of the research and evaluation of their work.

Experience of facilitating inclusive arts projects and doing arts-based research inform Jayne Lloyd’s approach to teaching. Inclusive arts projects have taught her that many forms of knowledge are important and valid and the answers are often in the room. As an arts-based researcher she entwines practice and theory to move her thinking and practice forward. In her teaching, she facilitates student-led learning that integrates theory with practical workshops that recognise the importance of learning through doing, through testing out and working with materials and other people.

Jayne enjoys teaching in a range of settings and working responsively to both the environment and the students. Her inclusive arts practice has given her the opportunity to practice in diverse settings and with a wide range of participants from care home residents living with dementia, young people not in mainstream education whose living room has become their classroom, groups of BA students in China who she communicated with through an interpreter, and a group of university lecturers from around the world who had come together to learn how to use drawing in their research.

Jayne has 15 years’ experience of delivering creative projects in a range of health and social care, education and community settings. Recently she has delivered arts workshops at the John Soane’s Museum, Nottingham University and Bow Arts studios in Wapping.

Jayne is interested supervising practice-based PhD research into collaborative or participatory arts practices with marginalised groups, arts in health and social care settings, arts-research and arts practices located in both gallery and community settings.
