Scholarly biography

Dr Arvind Upadhyay works in the Logistics and Supply Chain Management Department at Brighton Business School, University of Brighton, UK.  He holds a PhD in Logistics and Supply Chain Management from the University of Bergamo, Italy in collaboration with SDA Bocconi Italy and MIT-Zaragoza Logistics Centre, Spain. As a doctoral researcher, he spent one year at the Cambridge Judge Business School and King’s College, University of Cambridge and at the Cranfield School of Management, UK. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), UK.

His MSC degree in Strategic Project Management European was on a European Commission’s Erasmus Mundus Scholarship from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK in collaboration with the MIP Business School of Politecnico di Milano, Italy and Umea University, Sweden. He holds a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering (BEng) and an MBA. 

Alongside teaching, Dr Upadhyay has taken an active role in the research and publications. His research papers were published in Production Planning and Control (PPC), Journal of Manufacturing Technology Management (JMTM), Strategic Change, Strategic Direction, Journal of Enterprise Information Management (JEIM), The TQM Journal, International Journal of Lean Six Sigma (IJLSS) and presented at international conferences including European Operations Management Association (EurOMA) Conferences, Production and Operations Management Society (POMS) Conference, British Academy of Management (BAM) and research lunch seminars at Cambridge Judge Business School.

Research interests

Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Sustainable Supply Chain Practices, Procurement, Operations Management, Project Management, Project-Based Innovation and Learning.

Supervisory Interests

Dr Upadhyay is supervising two full-time PhD students as their lead supervisor. He welcomes enquiries from potential PhD students in the areas of operations, logistics and supply chain management. He also has a particular interest in innovative empirical methodologies.

Knowledge exchange

Dr Upadhyay has fifteen years of experience including eight years of academic and seven years of corporate experience in India, Switzerland and the UK. He welcomes enquiries for guest lectures, consulting projects, research collaboration and research degree supervision in the area of logistics and supply chain management, project management, sustainability, and operations management.

Approach to teaching

Dr Upadhyay combines a sound technical base across all aspects of operations, logistics and supply chain management with excellent communication skills, delivering knowledge, understanding and skills in a user-friendly, relevant manner. He has teaching experience across both Masters and Undergraduate levels and on vocational and professional courses. His teaching stretches across the management spectrum, with an emphasis on integrating operations and supply chain with other management subject areas.
