Personal profile
Research interests
Andrew is interested in how spatial planning can help to deliver climate change adaptation and mitigation, manage coastal change and flooding, encourage integrated water management and regulate short term rentals such as AirBnB.
Through his private practice, has contributed to government, government agency and research organisation projects on
- delivering integrated water management through planning
- flooding, including multiple objective SuDS and best practice in Strategic Flood Risk Assessments.
He has published articles and blogs in town planning journals and websites on flooding and coastal change in England and Portugal.
Knowledge exchange
Through his involvement with the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) he has brought planning and climate research to a wider audience of practitioners. This includes articles, blogs and chairing / organising events and webinars such as the RTPI SE Bridging The Gap webinars in which University graduates present the findings of their MSc dissertations to practitioner planners.
Approach to teaching
Andrew is interested in supervising Masters students in the role of planning in climate change adaptation and mitigation, coastal issues, flood risk management, green infrastructure and health.
He has supervised MSc dissertations - some commended in the RTPI Excellence in Research Awards - on subjects including:
- the role of planning in 'levelling up'
- delivering good river health through planning
- mineral planning
- controls on short term holiday lets
- planning decisions in areas of tidal flood risk - 'locking in' problems
- climate change considerations in neighbourhood planning
- how the urban heat island is considered in planning.
Andrew's approach to teaching is to encourage students to learn from each other and to involve practitioners as well as formal lectures. His learning sessions usually involve group working.
