Research interests
Dr. Alex Bliss is an experienced researcher, consultant, lecturer, and coach. Alex is accredited as a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences and through the United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association. Alex has a broad range of research interests, but principally researches golf science, particularly physical training for golfers. He also conducts research into performance modelling, coach/athlete relationships and physical profiling. He is Editor-in-Chief at the International Journal of Golf Science and board member for the European Tour and Ladies European Tour Research and Scientific Committee.
Away from golf, Alex also supervises projects and publishes research in the areas of youth sport, growth and maturation, bio-banding and relative age. He has experience too of physical demand research with the England and Wales Cricket Board has supervised over 15 MRes projects in professional football.
Alex recently has also partnered with Cirque du Soleil as part of a physical profiling strategy for their performance artists.
Supervisory Interests
Alex is interested in supervising students in the areas of strength and conditioning, high-performance sport, and sport physiology.
Scholarly biography
Leadership Experience:
Alex is an experienced academic leader. He was Programme Director for the BSc in Strength and Conditioning Science and the Course Lead for the MSc in Applied Strength and Conditioning Science at St. Mary's University, Twickenham from 2018-2025. Alex validated and revalidated both of these degrees.
Alex was also Associate Professor and Subject Lead (eq. Associate Head of School) from 2020-2025 for Strength and Conditioning at St. Mary's which had a student body of ~500 and ~10 staff, many of whom he line managed. He also led the accreditation process with the IUSCA.
From a research leadership perspective, Alex is Section Editor for the International Journal of Strength and Conditioning and the Editor-in-Chief for the International Journal of Golf Science.
Alex has also been lead external examiner at Northumbria University since 2021 and has been an external examiner for the revalidation of the MSc in Strength and Conditioning at Canterbury Christ Church and Winchester Universities. He has chaired exam boards, and been a member of the ethics committee and quality, curriculum and student experience committee
Approach to teaching
Alex prides himself on trying to bring energy and enjoyment to his sessions. As an experienced "pracademic" Alex enjoys detailing theoretical and scientific aspects of strength and conditioning, sports coaching, and sport and exercise sciences for his students, but also enlivens his sessions by drawing on his experiences of applied practice.
Alex particularly enjoys research project supervision, sessions on improving employability skills for students, and trying to create links with industry partners to enrich the student experience
Knowledge exchange
Alex has an extensive knowledge exchange background. He managed the Sport and Exercise Science Consultancy Unit at the University of Brighton from 2012-2017 and has worked with a number of high profile partners including England Golf, England and Wales Cricket Board, Fulham FC, Crystal Palace FC, Tottenham Hotspur FC, Chelsea FC, Brentford FC, Charlton AFC, Cirque du Soleil, and many others.
