Approach to teaching

My primary approach to teaching follows principles of practice and problem based learning. For my teaching sessions, I break down difficult concepts into bite size knowledge, use a variety of teaching methods that suit different students' needs, and include interesting stories or innovations to keep students engaged. As a teacher, I enjoy helping students on their learning journey, and seeing them developed into confident and competent graduates. I highly value the importance of independent learning and critical thinking skills as required fundamental skillsets for students to develop lifelong learning skills. 

I am a Fellow of Advance HE. I have completed PGCert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education in 2017. 

Research interests

My primary research interest is in footwear from the physical, biomechanical, psychological, and social perspectives. I also have particular interests in pedagogic/educational, policy, placement, and public health research. I am a mixed-method researcher with experiences in using quantitative, qualitative, and review (e.g. systematic review, scoping review, conceptual review) methods. 

Previously, I have completed research in gait analysis, orthotics/footwear biomechanics, musculoskeletal biomechanics, and neuromuscular controls of the body. Thus, I also have experience in using various biomechanical equipment including 3D motion sensors (eg. Vicon), force platforms, pressure sensors, electromyography (EMG), and 2D video analysis.

Supervisory Interests

I am interested in supervising passionate and committed students regardless of the subject areas, as long as they are within my scope of extertises. For example, research projects that are aligned with my research interests, or that I have methodological expertises in. 

In the past 5 years, I have successfully supervised 11 MSc research projects, 7 BSc / MSc (pre-registration) research projects, and 2 BMBS research projects.

  • The prevalence of frailty in elderly community-based diabetic compared to non-diabetic populations and the relationship between these conditions: a systematic review
  • An investigation on the reduction of 1st metatarsal plantar pressures with a novel offloading device (the Mandakini) in a Singaporean population
  • The effects of heel lift insoles on muscle activities in the lower legs
