Scholarly biography

Since February 2022 I have been a Principal Lecturer in Computer Science in the School of Architecture, Technology and Engineering at the University of Brighton. Prior to this, I was a Senior Lecturer from February 2019 to January 2022, a Lecturer from May 2018 to January 2019 and a Research Fellow from March 2017 to March 2018. I'm also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

In terms of education, I obtained a BSc (Hons) from Heriot-Watt University in 2008, an MSc in Internet Software Systems from the University of Birmingham in 2011 and a PhD in Applied Informatics from the University of Macedonia (Greece) in 2017.

I have published more than 50 peer reviewed articles, served the wider community via various chairing roles and committee memberships for conferences and workshops (e.g. Local Organising Committee member at the 31st International Conference on Artificial Neural Networks ICANN 2022, Special Session Organizer track on recommender systems REC 2019 held at the 11th International Conference on Computational Collective Intelligence ICCCI 2019, Workshop Chair at the 19th International Conference on Engineering Applications of Neural Networks EANN 2018, Publicity chair at the 10th International Conference on Computational Collective Intelligence ICCCI 2018 and program committee member for several other conferences) and by reviewing for a wide range of journals for publishers such as IEEE, Springer, Elsevier, Wiley, Taylor & Francics and others.

Approach to teaching

Over the past few years I have taught a wide range of Computer Science topics covering the areas of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cybersecurity and Web technologies in both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. I am enthusiastic about teaching and the modules that I teach. I adopt an interactive teaching approach where I aim to keep students engaged by asking questions and adapting accordingly. My teaching involves a variety of methods including lectures, practical exercises and assignments that encourage independent learning.

I have facilitated research into the curriculum by introducing the concept of Machine Learning for Cybersecurity for both my undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Furthermore, I have integrated research into final year undergraduate projects, which has led to scientific publications based on the project results and integrated relevant aspects of it into teaching.
