Research interests

My PhD is investigating the use of sleep hygiene to improve sleep indices for female athletes. I am interested in the potential of sleep to enhance performance and in improving the tools available to coaches to monitor and enhance athletes' sleep.

Scholarly biography

Julie is a UKSCA accredited strength and conditioning coach and has coached a wide range of athletes from entry-level beginners to Olympians. Julie was one of the first coaches in the UK to develop and build a strength and conditioning programme within a private school, progressing the programme from inception, servicing a few athletes, to a programme of over 30 athletes attracting oversees students and generating profit for the school. She has consulted on the development of many school programmes since and continues to advise many on the development of many such programmes. Following this success, Julie was invited to build and lead the scholarship programme for a London University, in which she worked as the head coach of the programme for over 5 years, servicing over 90 athletes, assisting two on their journey to the Olympic Games, and many to Commonwealth and National Championships. Julie currently runs her own consultency business alongside a wellness monitoring app, Daylia, which continues to expand its features as a monitoring tool, and is intended to grow to become a useful marker of daily readiness for both coaches and general public.

Having been a coach for many years, Julie noticed the gap in working practices of strength and conditioning/sports science coaches in terms of sleep monitoring, and is determined to use her research to improve the industry standard in this area.
