Profile Information

Our research aims to understand and explain the influence of human activities on water, land and air to support improved public health. We focus on developing appropriate, practical solutions and strategies to manage and effectively control the release and transmission of contaminants, such as pathogenic microorganisms, macro pollutants, airborne particulate matter and antibiotic resistance genes within the environment.

Our research falls under the following four themes: (1) Air quality management; (2) Community engagement and training; (3) Waste management and (4) Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in low-resource and emergency settings.

The group works extensively with the international academic partners, Non-Governmental Organisations (e.g. UNICEF, Médecins Sans Frontières), the water and waste industry, Defra, The Committee of the Medical Effects of Air Pollution and with community groups and stakeholders.

Our researchers are also developing methods to detect, monitor and model the presence of human and non-human pollutants and emerging contaminants in a range of terrestrial, atmospheric, and aquatic environments. Our findings provide high impact, evidence-based science with which to inform policy and change behaviours.
